Flight Experience

American operates a Boeing 777 and 787 to Europe. Business class is arranged in a 1-2-1 reverse herringbone cabin layout on the 777. On the 787, the cabin layout is 1-2-1 and some seats are rear facing. Many consider the 777 to be a nicer experience.

Regardless of aircraft, each seat will be lie-flat and have direct aisle access.

You may prefer to eat at the DFW Flagship Lounge. Inflight service can be a mixed bag, but American has a solid selection of entertainment options to keep you occupied and the bed is comfortable.

Best Ways To Book

Finnair Plus: Great Rate, Combine Avios From BA

Finnair’s rate of 65,000 Avios isn’t the bet outright, but Amex’s 30% transfer bonus to British Airways makes it an amazing option. You can transfer 50,000 Amex points to your BA account then combine Avios into your Finnair account.

While BA would charge you $1,000+ in taxes/fees for a one-way from the US or ~$618 from Germany, the taxes/fees when booking with Finnair are only ~$242.

Note: Finnair does not have access to as many award seats as other partners.

Cathay: Reduced Surcharges, Easy To Earn

With Cathay, you’ll need 63,000 Asia Miles for a one-way award. Plus, Cathay doesn’t pass on all of the surcharges. Cathay is one of your best option if you have Amex, Capital One, or Citi points from Charlotte. or with Bilt points from Dallas.

I would expect this to be the best option for most people.

Alaska: Great Rate, No Surcharges, Bilt Partner

At 55,000 miles one-way and no surcharges, Alaska miles are your best bet from Charlotte if you have Bilt points.

American: Great Rate, No Surcharges, Tough To Earn

While American’s own members sometimes have access to more award space than partners and the 62,000-mile rate is solid, it can be tough to earn the miles. Your only options are co-branded Barclays and Citi cards.

How To Search

Here's how to run the search with Alaska:

  1. If you want to book a one-way, check "One-way"

  2. Check "Use miles"

  3. Enter your origin & destination

  4. Select your dates

  5. Select number of passengers

  6. Run the search

  7. Complete the booking

Before you transfer points, search with the airline program you’ll use to book.

To book with Finnair, I would use the online chat. You can also call to book.

Happy booking!
