Flight Experience
American operates couple of 1-2-1 business class cabin layouts on these routes. I prefer the their reverse herringbone option. The other cabin layout has front and rear facing seats. It's not bad, just not what I prefer.

Best Ways To Book
Alaska: Great One-way Rates, Free Stopover, No Surcharges
At 57,500 miles, Alaskas Mileage Plan provides a great option to book with no surcharges and include a stopover on a one-way award ticket. Please keep in mind that you cannot connect on other partners.
American: Solid Round-trip Rates, More Award Space, No Surcharges
With Bilt as a transfer partner, American miles are a bit easier to earn than Alaska but one-way rates are a bit rough, especially business class. However, the round-trip rates are competitive and you won't get hit with surcharges.
Please note that connecting on a partner airline such as British Airways can reduce the miles required to the partner rate of 57,500 miles.
Cathay: Easier To Earn, Reduced Surcharges
From Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, and Raleigh, 63,000 Cathay miles is a great way to book with reduced surcharges. Plus, you can transfers Amex, Bilt, Capital One, and Citi points so it's easy to acquire the necessary miles.
Qantas: Easier To Earn, Reduced Surcharges
Qantas is your best option from Boston and New York at 57,000 points one-way with reduced surcharges. You can transfer points from Amex, Capital One, and Citi so it's easy to get the points you need.
This is also your best option with transferable points if you're flying from LAX at 82,000 points one-way.

Final Thoughts
It's great to see some summer business class award space on American even on select routes. Additionally, it's often tough to find business class from the west coast so the LAX option is particularly useful if you're booking a trip in the next couple of months.
Happy Booking!
