Emirates Business Class, Up To 7 Seats

The combo of egregious carrier-imposed surcharges and the lack of award availability to partners means I rarely send Emirates award space to/from Dubai.

However, there’s a bunch of business class space available to Air Canada Aeroplan out of Montreal and Toronto which means you can avoid the surcharges and get a much better award rate. Plus, there’s a transfer bonus to make it even better!

Flight Experience

The business class cabin on the A380 is arranged in a 1-2-1 layout so everyone has direct aisle access and a lie-flat seat. the big selling point on the A380 is the world-famous inflight bar at the rear of the cabin. Definitely worth hanging out at the bar with your friends - or, new friends you've just met - while having a drink.

On the 77L, business class is arranged in a 2-2-2 layout. While only some seats have direct aisle access, each seat is lie-flat.

Note: Many are familiar with the 2-3-2 layout on Emirates’ Boeing 777. That layout is on the Boeing 777-300. The flight out of Montreal is on a Boeing 777-200 (77L).

Best Ways To Book

Aeroplan: Great One-Way Option With Chase Transfer Bonus

Aeroplan is your best one-way option at 125,500 points and no surcharges. With the Chase 20% transfer bonus, you’d only need 105,000 Ultimate Rewards points.

If you have the Chase Aeroplan Card, you can also get a 10% transfer bonus when you transfer 50,000+ Chase Ultimate Rewards points. That would bring the total bonus to 30% which means you’d only need to transfer 97,000 Chase points.

Connections could increase the award rate. You can include a stopover for 5,000 additional miles. Use
GCmap to calculate your total flight distance and double-check Aeroplan's award chart for Emirates.

Emirates: Access To More Award Space, But At A Cost

While the Emirates Skywards award rate for a round-trip ticket is only 174,000 miles, you'll want to consider whether $1,700+ taxes/fees is worth it. Skywards members  get access to more award space if Aeroplan doesn’t have space on dates you want.

Connections could increase the award rate. Emirates allows a stopover on one-way awards for no extra miles.

Note: Round-trip rates can vary a bit. The saver rate is 174,000 miles while the Flex Plus rate is double the one-way rate at 276,000 miles. You can also find dates that are a combo of the two at 225,000 miles.

Emirates Skywards+

Emirates offers three tiers of Skywards+ subscriptions. The Classic option is $399 per year and the one that might be worth considering as this membership provides a 20% discount on one Skywards Classic Reward each year.

Emirates business class is a solid way to make the journey to the Middle East. If you decide to venture beyond the UAE, it’s easy to get flights to the Maldives, Oman, India, Kenya, and plenty of other destinations.

Happy booking!
