Flight Experience

LATAM operates Boeing 787s on these routes. While some of their 787-9s have their newer business class product, none of their 787-8s do. I would expect to get the older product.

The older business class cabin will be arranged in a 2-2-2 layout. This layout is open so there isn't any privacy. Each seat will be lie-flat. If you're traveling solo, a middle section seat is ideal since both seats have direct aisle access.

The catering and crew both get solid marks overall.

Best Ways To Book

Alaska Airlines: Great Rates, Tougher To Earn

Alaska Mileage Plan is tough to top from ATL or JFK at only 35,000 miles one-way.  Similarly, 50,000 Alaska miles from LAX is your best bet if you have the miles. The tough part is that you can only transfer points from Bilt (or Marriott in a pinch).

Vigin Atlantic: Solid Rates From ATL/JFK, Easy To Earn

At 50,000 points, Virgin Atlantic’s one-way rate isn’t as good as Alaska’s but many will find it’s the best option. With Amex, Bilt, Capital One, Chase, and Citi as transfer partners, just about anyone can use this option.

Qantas: Solid Option From LAX

At 75,000 points from LAX, Qantas has a slight advantage over British Airways Avios. Like Virgin, the advantage over Alaska stems from transfer partnerships with Amex, Capital One, and Citi.

How To Book

Here's how to run the search with Alaska:

  1. If you want to book a one-way, check "One-way"

  2. Check "Use miles"

  3. Enter your origin & destination

  4. Select your dates

  5. Select number of passengers

  6. Run the search

  7. Complete the booking

If you want to see a calendar of options, you'll want to use this page to search.

Before you transfer points, search with the airline program you’ll use to book.

Final Thoughts

If Machu Picchu has been on your list to visit, this is a great way to fly there! I definitely recommend the Hiram Bingham train from Cuzco to Machu Picchu.

Happy booking!
