Book Luxury Hotels With Perks
While you can still book via the self-service booking portal and get perks such as daily breakfast for two, a room upgrade, and a $100 property credit, I've made a small change.
Since some hotels aren't available via the self-serve portal, I've added an option to submit a booking request and I can book your stay manually.
IMPORTANT: You need to pick a hotel and find the Standard Rate/Flexible Rate before submitting a request. You cannot book member rates or prepaid rates with perks. This is not a service to comparison shop.

Flight Experience
KLM operates a few different aircraft on these routes. Since the business class cabin layout depends on the aircraft, here's a quick rundown:
KLM
Boeing 787: 1-2-1 reverse herringbone
Boeing 777: 2-2-2 (1-2-1 on select aircraft)
Airbus A330: 2-2-2
I quite like KLM's service and I love the Delft Blue houses you get at the end of the flight. If you have the choice, pick an aircraft with a 1-2-1 cabin layout. If you find a 1-2-1 cabin on a Boeing 777, those seats are the newest with doors.

Best Ways To Book
Flying Blue: Great Rates, Free Stopover, More Award Space
The saver level award rate between the US and Europe is likely your best bet at 50,000 miles on-way. Connections on partners will generally increase the award rate. You can include a stopover but you'll need to call to book.
Virgin Atlantic: Great East Coast Option With Transfer Bonus
On off-peak dates, you an save 1,500 points when booking one-way KLM flights from/to the east coast. Not particularly exciting.
However, when the Citi ThankYou Points 30% transfer bonus goes live on February 18, Virgin points become a great option from the east coast.
Here's how many Citi points you'll need with the transfer bonus:

How To Book
You can pick either Air France or KLM's site and run your search. I use Air France and the process works like this:
- Select "Book with miles"
- Select "Log in"
- Sign into your account
- Enter your origin/destination
- Enter your travel date(s)
- Enter the number of passengers
- Enter the class of service
- Run the search
- Select your flights
- Click through to book
Virgin doesn't have access to all dates so search on their site to confirm before transferring points.

Final Thoughts
I've always been a big fan of KLM and their kind of quirky approach. I mean, who doesn't love the Delft Blue house souvenirs!
