Flight Experience

American operates a Boeing 777 and 787 to Europe. Business class is arranged in a 1-2-1 reverse herringbone cabin layout on the 777. On the 787, the cabin layout is 1-2-1 and some seats are rear facing. Many consider the 777 to be a nicer experience.

Regardless of aircraft, each seat will be lie-flat and have direct aisle access.

You may prefer to eat at the Greenwich Lounge (JFK) or the Flagship Lounge. Inflight service can be a mixed bag, but American has a solid selection of entertainment options to keep you occupied and the bed is comfortable.

Best Ways To Book

Cathay: Citi Transfer Bonus, Reduced Surcharges, Easy To Earn

With Citi’s 15% transfer bonus, you’ll only need 55,000 points to get 63,000 Asia Miles for a one-way award. Plus, Cathay doesn’t pass on all of the surcharges.

Even without the Citi bonus, Cathay is likely your best option if you have Amex or Capital One points and are flying from airports other than JFK.

Alaska: Great Rate, No Surcharges, Bilt Partner

At 55,000 miles one-way and no surcharges, Alaska miles are your best bet if you have Bilt points.

Qantas: Great From JFK, Reduced Surcharges, Easy To Earn

Qantas isn't usually a great option, but 57,000 points from JFK is a great one-way  rate when you consider that you can transfer Amex, Capital One, and Citi points.

American: Great Rate, No Surcharges, Tough To Earn

With the loss of Bilt as a transfer partner, it’s much harder to earn American miles. You’re really left with co-branded Barclays and Citi cards to earn miles directly.

So, while American’s own members can get access to more award space than partners and the 54,000-mile rate is quite good, it can be tough to earn the miles.

Final Thoughts

It's great to see American release business class award space to Madrid - even if it is a bit scattered. Whether you choose to stay in Madrid or venture out to other parts of Spain, you won’t be disapppointed!

Happy booking!
