Flight Experience

Lufthansa operates flights with their old 2-2-2 business class on these two routes. Candidly, the product is outdated. However, the inflight catering has improved in recent years. I’ve generally found the crews to be solid.

Best Ways To Book

Lifemiles: Great option, no surcharges

Lifemiles is a great choice at 63,000 miles one-way and no surcharges. If you have Amex, Bilt, Capital One, or Citi points, it’s your best bet for these two routes.

If you redeem a ton of lifemiles each year, it might be worth getting a lifemiles+ subscription to get a 10% rebate on Star Alliance redemptions. A Lite membership is only $240 per year while a Basic membership is $600 but you get free changes  and cancellations. Most people probably won’t need the higher tier memberships.

Aeroplan: Best option with Chase transfer bonus

Aeroplan is a solid option at 70,000 points one-way. However, if you have Chase points, it’s your bet option thanks to a 20% transfer bonus. With that bonus, you’d only need to transfer 59,000 points.

If you have the Chase Aeroplan card as well, you can get a 10% transfer bonus on transfers for 50,000+ Chase points. Combined, that’s a 30% transfer bonus which means you’d only need to transfer 54,000 Chase points.

If your total flight distance exceeds 6,000 miles, the award rate will get bumped up to 90,000 points. You can also include a stopover for 5,000 additional miles. Use GCmap to calculate your total flight distance and double-check Aeroplan's award chart.

How To Book

You can use United to search.

  1. From United's homepage, select Advanced search

  2. Choose to show price in miles

  3. Select Roundtrip or One-way

  4. Enter the origin & destination

  5. Select Nonstop only (if you don't need a connection)

  6. Select the number of passengers

  7. Select your dates or choose Flexible dates and choose a month

  8. Select Business

  9. Run the search

  10. If booking with another Star Alliance partner, confirm space by searching with that program

  11. Transfer points (if necessary)

  12. Log into your account

  13. Run the search again

  14. Complete the booking

Once you know the exact dates you want, run a search with the program you'll use to book. As always, I recommend confirming the program you're using sees the award space before you transfer points.

Final Thoughts

Say what you will about Lufthansa’s business class product, the ability to get 9 seats non-stop to Europe from St. Louis and Detroit isn’t an every day occurrence and cou
