Flight Experience

American operates a Boeing 777 and 787 to Europe. Business class is arranged in a 1-2-1 reverse herringbone cabin layout on the 777. On the 787, the cabin layout is 1-2-1 and some seats are rear facing. Many consider the 777 to be a nicer experience.

Regardless of aircraft, each seat will be lie-flat and have direct aisle access.

Best Ways To Book

Alaska: Great Rate, No Surcharges

Alaska’s rate of 45,000 miles from is the best you’ll find. Since you can transfer Bilt points and Amex points (via Hawaiian), it’s pretty easy to earn the points you need. Routes at 55,000 miles are also a great option.

However, Cathay’s Asia Miles and Avios could be a better option once Alaska’s rate jumps to 70,000 miles out of Dallas and LAX.

Qantas: Great Option For Two Routes

If you have Amex, Capital One, or Citi points, Qantas is a great option if you’re flying between JFK and Madrid or Boston and London at 57,000 points one-way.

Cathay: Great Rate From Midwest & West Coast

At 63,000 miles, Cathay is tough to beat for most routes that aren’t on the east coast. Plus, you can transfer points from Amex, Bilt, Citi and Capital One so the miles are easy to earn.

Finnair (Avios): Solid Rate, Easy To Earn, Limited Surcharges

While you can book American with any Avios program including British Airways, Iberia, and Qatar Airways, Finnair Plus is your best option as they only require 65,000 Avios and they don’t tack on carrier-imposed surcharges.

You can only transfer Capital One miles to Finnair, but you can transfer Amex, Bilt, and Chase points to British Airways and Citi points to Qatar Airways. You can then move those Avios to your Finnair Plus account to book.

Unlike British Airways, Finnair does not pass on all of the surcharges so taxes/fees down will be much more reasonable. Just note that you need to call to book.

American: Great Rate, No Surcharges, Tough To Earn

If you have American miles, 54,000 or 62,000 miles is a solid option, but I’d choose Finnair Avios over this. If you want to use your AA miles, consider including a connection on a partner airline to drop the rate to 57,500 miles one-way.

How To Search

Here's how to run the search with Alaska:

  1. If you want to book a one-way, check "One-way"

  2. Check "Use miles"

  3. Enter your origin & destination

  4. Select your dates

  5. Select number of passengers

  6. Run the search

  7. Complete the booking

Before you transfer points, search with the airline program you’ll use to book.

You’ll need to call to book with the following airlines:

  • Etihad Guest: 877-690-0767

  • Finnair Plus: 929-474-6049

Happy booking!
