Since I've heard from a bunch of you who are trying to figure out flights to/from Europe in the next month, I thought I'd share some Lufthansa business and first class award space.

While Lufthansa business class isn't fancy, if you need 4 or even up to 8 seats, it could be just what you need. Of course, if you can book first class, you'll be in for a treat!

Flight Experience

Business Class

While seats are lie-flat, this 2-2-2 business class cabin layout doesn't provide direct aisle access for all passengers. If you want easy aisle access without your seatmate having to climb around you, pick one of the middle seats.

While the seat won't win any awards, the service and food is generally solid.

First Class

This is where Lufthansa shines. It's a pretty open cabin but you can put up your seats screen to have more privacy. From the caviar to the champagne to the main courses, Lufthansa's meal service is great. Plus, you'll have access to the excellent first class lounge in Munich. Make sure you get a rubber ducky!

Best Ways To Book

LifeMiles: Great One-Way Option, No Surcharges

LifeMiles is a great option at 63,000 miles one-way for business class or 87,000 for first class if you have Amex, Capital One, or Citi points. The one exception is flights to/from Boston (see below).

With the Amex 15% transfer bonus, you'd only need to transfer 55,000 points for business class or 76,000 points for first class.

Please keep in mind that LifeMiles can bet tricky. Use Firefox to reduce the number of issues when searching. Also, remember that you need to use the LifeMiles site NOT Avianca's site to search.

Aeroplan: Best Option with Bilt and Chase

If you have Bilt or Chase points, Aeroplan has the advantage at 70,000 points one-way for business class from most US airports.

If your total flight distance exceeds 6,000 flight miles because of connections, you'll need 90,000 points one-way. At this point, you might want to look to United if you have Bilt or Chase points.

If you have Capital One Miles, 60,000 Aeroplan points on the nonstop between Boston and Munich is slightly better than 63,000 LifeMiles.

You can use GCmap to calculate your total flight distance and double-check Aeroplan's zone-based chart. You can include a stopover for 5,000 additional miles on a one-way award.

United MileagePlus: Best Option from SAN with Bilt or Chase

If your total flight distance exceeds 6,000 miles, United's rate of 88,000 miles one-way will be a better option than 90,000 Aeroplan points if you are going to transfer Bilt or Chase points. This makes it the best option for San Diego flights, but it could also work well if you have connecting flights.

If you book a round-trip award ticket, you can use United's Excursionist Perk (a free one-way flight within a single region) to see another city in Europe. Practically speaking, this is United's stopover program.

How To Book

Unfortunately, United has removed the once useful flexible search option that allowed you to see a snapshot of award space for two months. However, you can still see a calendar of 30 days (even if it's not always accurate).
  1. From United's homepage, select Advanced search
  2. Choose to show price in miles
  3. Enter the origin & destination
  4. Select your dates or choose Flexible dates
  5. Select nonstop
  6. Select the number of passengers
  7. Select Business
  8. Show flights from "Star Alliance airlines"
  9. Run the search
  10. Transfer points (if necessary)
  11. Log into your account
  12. Run the search again
  13. Complete the booking
Once you know the exact dates you want, you can run the search with the program you'll be using to book. As always, I recommend confirming the program you're using sees the award space before you transfer points.

Final Thoughts

It's nice to see Lufthansa first class space available more than just a couple of days from departure. Plus, the business class option provides even more availability in the next month or so.

Happy Booking!
