Flight Experience

The star of the show is the inflight catering and the lounge in Istanbul. While inflight food can be tough to get right, Turkish is known for doing just that.

For the most privacy, try to find space on a Boeing 787-9 or Airbus A350-900. The business class cabin layouts on these aircraft are 1-2-1 which means a direct aisle access plus a lie-flat seat for everyone.

The business class cabins on the Airbus A330 and Boeing 777 have a 2-2-2 and 2-3-2, respectively. These layouts lack privacy but the seats are comfortable.

Best Ways To Book

Lifemiles: Great One-Way Option, No Surcharges

At 63,000 miles one-way + no surcharges, LifeMiles provides a great way to book if you have Amex, Capital One, or Citi points whether you need a non-stop, connection within the US, or a connection to somewhere else in Europe.

ANA: Great Round-Trip Award Rate, Reasonable Surcharges

With Amex points, you can't beat 100,000 miles round-trip. Just keep in mind that you can only book round-trip, you'll be on the hook for surcharges, and Amex transfers can take a few days to process.

Aeroplan: Great With Chase Transfer Bonus, No Surcharges

Aeroplan is a solid option at 70,000 points from the east coast and midwest. if you have Bilt or Chase points if you want to avoid surcharges and include a stopover on a one-way award ticket. From Texas and west, you'll need 90,000 points.

With the 20% Chase transfer bonus, you’ll need the following points:

  • ATL, BOS, DTW, EWR, IAD, JFK, ORD: 59,000 points

  • DEN, DFW, IAH, LAX, SEA: 75,000 points

If you have the Chase Aeroplan Card, you can also get a 10% transfer bonus when you transfer 50,000+ Chase Ultimate Rewards points. That would bring the total bonus to 30% which means you’d only need:

  • ATL, BOS, DTW, EWR, IAD, JFK, ORD: 54,000 points

  • DEN, DFW, IAH, LAX, SEA: 70,000 points

Keep in mind that connections could increase the award rate. Use use GCmap to calculate your total flight distance and double-check Aeroplan's zone-based chart. Stopovers can be included for 5,000 miles on a one-way.

United: From West Coast With Connections & Bilt/Chase Points

If you have Bilt or Chase points, United has a 2,000-point advantage over Aeroplan at 88,000 miles one-way from Texas and west. You can also include a free one-way flight within a region (basically a stopover) if you book a round-trip award ticket.
