Austrian Airlines Business Class, Up To 9 Seats |
| As is often the case, Austrian Airlines is good about releasing space for off-peak travel dates. With that in mind, they have released a chunk of space for this spring and in the fall. You can book up to nine seats, so this is a great one for families.
You’ll find the most space from Montreal, but New York has a nice chunk of space on the return leg later this year.
Now, let’s get into it! |

| | | | | Flight Experience On the Boeing 767, you’ll find a 1-2-1 staggered cabin layout. Each seat is lie-flat and has direct aisle access.
On the Boeing 777, the cabin arranged in a combo 1-2-1 / 2-2-2 layout. If your route has the 777, try to get one of the throne seats if you're traveling solo as it will provide the most space and the most privacy.
Select flights from JFK and ORD will be on a Boeing 787 with a 1-2-1 reverse herringbone layout. Personally, I think this is the best Austrian business class.
Austrian excels with DO&CO catering. If you like coffee, make sure you try their Viennese coffee. Save the coffee for breakfast if you want to sleep though.

| Best Ways To Book
Lifemiles: Great Option From YUL, No Surcharges, Transfer Bonus
Note: Lifemiles is currently only showing space for Montreal. If you’re able to book a U.S. route, I’d love to hear the details! If you’re flying out of YUL, lifemiles is your best option at 63,000 miles one-way.
Plus, lifemiles is offering 15% bonus when you transfer Amex Membership Rewards points. With the transfer bonus, you’ll only need 55,000 miles for a one-way from Montreal. Keep in mind that this transfer bonus is run by lifemiles so it won’t be reflected in your Amex account.
If you redeem a ton of lifemiles each year, it might be worth getting a lifemiles+ subscription to get a 10% rebate on Star Alliance redemptions. Aeroplan: Great Rate, No Surcharges
If you’re flight distance is under 6,000 miles from the U.S., Aeroplan is your best option at 70,000 points one-way if you have Amex, Bilt, Capital One, or Chase points.
If you have the Chase Aeroplan Card, you can also get a 10% bonus when you transfer 50,000+ Ultimate Rewards points to Aeroplan. That means you’d only need 64,000 Chase points.
If you connect from the west coast, you’ll exceed 6,000 flight miles and get bumped to the next band of Aeroplan’s award chart. In that case, you’ll need 90,000 points.
You can also include a stopover for 5,000 additional miles. Use GCmap to calculate your total flight distance and double-check Aeroplan's award chart.
United: Solid Bilt or Chase Option From West Coast, No Surcharges
If you have Bilt or Chase points and are connecting from the west coast, United could have a small advantage over Aeroplan at 88,000 miles one-way.
You can also utilize The Excursionist Perk on a round-trip award ticket to include a free one-way award ticket within Europe. This is United’s version of a stopover. |
