Flight Experience


ITA Airways operates three aircraft to the US with different business class cabin layouts.
  • Airbus A350-900: 1-2-1 reverse herringbone
  • Airbus A330-900neo: 1-2-1 staggered
  • Airbus A330-200: 1-2-1 staggered
The A350 and A330neo aircraft are the newest in the fleet and would be my first choices if you have the option. Regardless, ITA has received great reviews for their food, drink, and amenities. Crews also get high marks for being friendly.

Best Ways To Book


Virgin Atlantic: The Only Option, But A Good One

The award rate is determined by a distance-based award chart. From the east coast, you can book a one-way for 75,000 points while a west coast departure increases the rate to 100,000 points. Miami falls in between at 85,000 points.

If you have Citi points, you can take advantage of a 30% transfer bonus to Virgin. That means you'd only need the following:
  • BOS/IAD/JFK: 58,000 Citi points
  • MIA: 66,000 Citi points
  • LAX/SFO: 77,000 Citi points

How To Book


The fastest way to search is on Virgin's site.
  1. Select origin/destination
    • If FCO/MXP aren't options, click Full Airport List then select the airport from that list
  2. Select one-way or round-trip
  3. Select date(s)
  4. Select number of passengers
  5. Select Advanced search
  6. Show Price in Points
  7. Show Fares For: Upper Class
  8. Click the arrow to search
  9. To expand 7-day view to 30 days, select Price Calendar
  10. Filter for Direct
  11. Select a date
  12. Select the flight
  13. Click Continue
  14. Choose seats
  15. Select review and pay
  16. Log into your account to complete booking
Virgin Atlantic Flying Club will put award space on hold for up to 24 hours, but you'll need to call to do so (800-862-8621).

Final Thoughts


It's great to see Virgin Atlantic with access to ITA Airways award space. With the dates available, you could take a trip this fall/winter or even lock in a spring break or summer trip next year.
