Flight Experience

Japan Airlines has a reputation for great service so a business class flight should be more than enjoyable. The biggest thing to keep in mind is that JAL operates different aircraft to/from North America.

On the 777-300, you'll find find a business class cabin arranged in a 2-3-2 layout with Apex Suites. The business class cabin on the 787-9 is similar but the layout is 2-2-2. Regardless, each seat is lie-flat and has direct aisle access. The window seats provide a ton of privacy and are preferred by many.

Best Ways To Book

Cathay: Citi Transfer Bonus, Easy To Earn

With Citi’s 15% transfer bonus, you’ll only need 78,000 Citi points to get 89,000 Asia Miles for a one-way award. I think many will find this to be the best option.

Even without Citi points, Cathay miles are easier to earn than most options as you can also transfer points from Amex, Bilt, Capital One.

American: Great Rate, No Surcharges, Tough To Earn

With the loss of Bilt as a transfer partner, it’s much harder to earn American miles. You’re really left with co-branded Barclays and Citi cards to earn miles directly. That means American’s rate of 60,000 miles is great, but tough to access for many.

Alaska: Solid Rate, Best Bilt Option, No Surcharges

At 75,000 miles one-way and no surcharges, Alaska miles are your best bet if you have Bilt points.

Qantas: Great From JFK, Reduced Surcharges, Easy To Earn

Qantas isn't usually a great option, but 57,000 points from JFK is a great one-way  rate when you consider that you can transfer Amex, Capital One, and Citi points.
