Flight Experience

The food and service are both solid. If you can get one of the throne seats, it's even better as you'll have tons of space -- the armrests are like small tables. If traveling with someone, you might want to choose seats in the middle section.

Unless you have Miles & More Senator or Hon Circle status, you won't be able to select the throne seats for free until 24-48 hours prior to departure (if available). However, you can pay ~$150-200 for a throne seat.

Best Ways To Book

Lifemiles: Great Option On Many Routes

Lifemiles is your best option for JFK to Zurich non-stop at 55,000 LifeMiles if you have Amex, Bilt, Capital One, or Citi points. On the Geneva route, 60,000 points is a solid rate but matched by Aeroplan.

Other U.S. options will require 69,000 lifemiles while flights from Canadian airports will require 63,000 miles. While lifemiles has the advantage from Toronto (YYZ), I would consider Aeroplan for U.S. options beyond the east coast and Montreal (YUL).

Aeroplan: Great Option From East Coast + Chase Transfer Bonus

If you have Bilt, Capital One, or Chase points, Aeroplan is your best bet at 60,000 points for a nonstop from the east coast - including Montreal - except for flights between JFK and Zurich.

A non-stop from the central U.S. and west coast is 70,000 points, but Aeroplan is generally easier to work with than lifemiles if there are issues, so I’m willing to use a 1,000 more miles.

If you fly the west coast routes and need a connection on either end, you’ll likely bump the rate up to 90,000 Aeroplan points.

Chase Transfer Bonus + Chase Aeroplan Card

With the 20% or 30% Chase transfer bonus to Aeroplan, this is a great deal. Just remember the points you’ll need is determined by the total flight miles. Here’s how many Chase points you’ll need based on the flight distance.

With a 20% bonus:

  • BOS, EWR, JFK, YUL: 50,000 points

  • IAD, LAX, MIA, ORD, SFO, YYZ: 59,000 points

With a 30% bonus:

  • BOS, EWR, JFK, YUL: 47,000 points

  • IAD, LAX, MIA, ORD, SFO, YYZ: 54,000 points

If you have the Chase Aeroplan Card, you can also get a 10% bonus when you transfer 50,000+ Chase points. If you pair this 10% bonus with the 30% transfer bonus, you’d only need to transfer 50,000 Chase points to get 70,000 Aeroplan points.
