Flight Experience

On some routes, flights are operated by an A330-900neo or A330-200. Both aircraft have a 1-2-1 business class cabin, but the A330neo is the nicer of the two. Many routes are operated by an A321neo with a combo 1-1/2-2 business class layout. It's basically the same layout as the older JetBlue Mint product.

While the food won't blow you away, the crews are friendly.

Best Ways To Book

Lifemiles: JFK Sweet Spot, Transfer Bonus From Amex

With Amex Membership Rewards, lifemiles is your best option thanks to a 15% transfer bonus. With the bonus, you’ll only need to transfer 55,000 Amex points to get the necessary 63,000 lifemiles.

On the flight from JFK to Lisbon, you’ll only need 35,000 lifemiles (31,000 Amex points. Please note this rate does not apply to fly from Lisbon to JFK.

Keep in mind that this transfer bonus is run by lifemiles, so you won’t see it on your Amex account.

If you redeem a ton of lifemiles each year, it might be worth getting a lifemiles+ subscription to get a 10% rebate on Star Alliance redemptions. A Lite membership is only $240 per year while a Basic membership is $600 but you get free changes  and cancellations. Most people probably don’t need the higher tier memberships.

Aeroplan: Great East Coast Option, Chase Transfer Bonus

Aeroplan is a great option at 60,000 points one-way for many non-stops. If you need depart from MIA or SFO, the extra flight distance will bump the rate to 70,000 points. Connections could also increase the rate to 70,000 points.

The 20% Chase transfer bonus gives Aeroplan the advantage from the east coast and Chicago.

  • BOS, EWR, IAD, JFK, ORD, YUL, YYZ / OPO-EWR: 50,000 Chase points

  • MIA, SFO: 59,000 Chase points

If you have the Chase Aeroplan Card, you can also get a 10% transfer bonus when you transfer 50,000+ Chase Ultimate Rewards points. That would bring the total bonus to 30% which means you’d only need to transfer 47,000 points or 54,000 points depending on the route.

If you connect from the west coast and within Europe, the total flight distance could bump the award rate up to 90,000 Aeroplan points.

You can also include a stopover for 5,000 additional miles. Use
GCmap to calculate your total flight distance and double-check Aeroplan's award chart.

ANA: Great Round-trip Option, Slow Amex Transfers

At 100,000 miles round-trip, ANA Mileage Club is your best round-trip option for most routes. However, Amex is your only transfer option and transfers can take a few days.

Connections won't increase the award rate but could increase the taxes/fees if you connect in Europe on a Star Alliance partner that has surcharges.

How To Book

You can use United to search.

  1. From United's homepage, select Advanced search

  2. Choose to show price in miles

  3. Select Roundtrip or One-way

  4. Enter the origin & destination

  5. Select Nonstop only (if you don't need a connection)

  6. Select the number of passengers

  7. Select your dates or choose Flexible dates and choose a month

  8. Select Business

  9. Run the search

  10. If booking with another Star Alliance partner, confirm space by searching with that program

  11. Transfer points (if necessary)

  12. Log into your account

  13. Run the search again

Once you know the exact dates you want, run a search with the program you'll use to book. As always, I recommend confirming the program you're using sees the award space before you transfer points.

Final Thoughts

Portugal continues to be one of the most requested destinations from STTP Premium members so it’s great to see plenty of non-stop space from the U,S.!

If you visit Lisbon, I would highly recommend scheduling a tour with my friend Antonio. I did two tours with him and he was excellent. Tell him I sent you!

Happy booking!
