Update To Booking Hotels With VIP Perks

While you can still book via the self-service booking portal and get perks such as daily breakfast for two, a room upgrade, and a $100 property credit, I've made a small change.

Since some hotels aren't available via the self-serve portal, I've added an option to submit a booking request and I can book your stay manually.

IMPORTANT: You need to pick a hotel and find the Standard Rate/Flexible Rate before submitting a request. You cannot book member rates or prepaid rates with perks. This is not a service to comparison shop.

To book Four Seasons or Rosewood, there's a special request form Four Seasons Preferred Partner can book prepaid rates (it's the exception).

For properties not in the portal, Four Seasons, or Rosewood, submit your booking request here.

Flight Experience

The star of the show is the inflight catering and the lounge in Istanbul. While inflight food can be tough to get right, Turkish is known for doing just that.

On their Airbus A350 and Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, you'll find a staggered 1-2-1 business class so each seat has direct aisle access and is a lie-flat seat.

If you're on one of their Boeing 777s or Airbus A330s, the cabin layout will be 2-3-2 and 2-2-2, respectively. There isn't much privacy, but the seats are comfy.

Best Ways To Book

Turkish: Best One-Way Rate, Surcharges Are Reasonable

Turkish has a big advantage over other options as its members have access to more award space. If you have Bilt or Capital One points, Turkish is an excellent option at 45,000 miles one-way.

You can call Turkish to hold space while you transfer points.

ANA: Great Round-Trip Award Rate, But Surcharges

You can't beat 88,000 miles round-trip. Just keep in mind that you can only book round-trip, you'll be on the hook for surcharges, and Amex transfers can take a few days to process.

LifeMiles: Great Rate, No Surcharges

At 63,000 miles one-way + no surcharges, LifeMiles provides a great way to book if you have Amex, Capital One, or Citi points whether you need a non-stop, connection within the US, or a connection to somewhere else in Europe.

Aeroplan: Solid Rate, No Surcharges

Aeroplan is a solid option the east coast and midwest at 70,000 points if you have Chase points and you want to avoid surcharges. If LifeMiles has issues with connections, Aeroplan is a good option if you have Amex, Bilt, or Capital One points.

Keep in mind that connections could increase the award rate. Use use GCmap to calculate your total flight distance and double-check Aeroplan's zone-based chart. Stopovers can be included for 5,000 miles on a one-way.

United: From West Coast With Connections & Chase Points

If you have Chase points and are flying from the west coast and need connecting flights, there's a decent chance United will have a 2,000-point advantage over Aeroplan - 88,000 United miles vs 90,000 Aeroplan points.

You can also include a free one-way flight within a region (basically a stopover) if you book a round-trip award ticket.

How To Book

If you don't know the exact dates you want to fly, keep things simple and use United's calendar search option.
  1. From United's homepage, select Advanced search
  2. Choose to show price in miles
  3. Enter the origin & destination
  4. Select Nonstop only
  5. Select your dates or choose Flexible dates and choose a month
  6. Select the number of passengers
  7. Select Business
  8. Show flights from All Star Alliance airlines
  9. Select Find flights
If booking with Turkish miles, go ahead and search on their site:
  1. Sign into your account (top right)
  2. Select "Award ticket - Buy a ticket with Miles"
  3. Enter origin/destination
  4. Select date
  5. Select cabin and number of passengers
You can call Turkish Airlines at 800-874-8875 to hold award space while you transfer points.

Once you know the exact dates you want, you can run the search with the program you'll be using to book. As always, I recommend confirming the program you're using sees the award space before you transfer points.

Final Thoughts

I absolutely loved Istanbul and highly recommend a visit, especially if you're a history nerd. There's plenty of great food to try, great views to take in from a rooftop bar, and make sure you enjoy a full Turkish breakfast.

A couple of friends of mine have an amazing shop there called 3rd Culture. Definitely worth a visit as you explore the city!

Happy booking!
