Flight Experience

The food and service are both solid. If you can get one of the throne seats, it's even better as you'll have tons of space -- the armrests are like small tables. If traveling with someone, you might want to choose seats in the middle section.

Unless you have Miles & More Senator or Hon Circle status, you won't be able to select the throne seats for free until 24-48 hours prior to departure (if available). However, you can pay ~$150-200 for a throne seat.

Best Ways To Book

Lifemiles: Great Option On Many Routes

Lifemiles is your best option for JFK to Zurich non-stop at 56,000 LifeMiles if you have Amex, Bilt, Capital One, or Citi points.

LifeMiles is also a great option at 63,000 miles one-way. If you need a domestic or intra-EU connection or aren't flying from the east coast, this could be a better option than Aeroplan if you don’t have Chase points

Aeroplan: Great Option, Best With Chase Transfer Bonus

If you have Bilt, Capital One, or Chase points, Aeroplan is your best bet at 60,000 points for a nonstop from Montreal, Boston, or Newark to Zurich or JFK to Geneva.

From several other cities, it'll be 70,000 points for the non-stop. If you fly the west coast routes and need a connection on either end, you’ll likely bump the rate up to 90,000 Aeroplan points.

Aeroplan award chart. You can use GCmap to calculate your total flight distance. A stopover requires 5,000 additional miles on a one-way award.

Chase Transfer Bonus To Aeroplan

The 20% Chase transfer bonus gives Aeroplan the advantage over lifemiles as you’ll only need to transfer 50,000 or 59,000 Chase points depending on the route.

If you have the Chase Aeroplan Card, you can get a 10% bonus when you transfer 50,000+ Chase points. That would bring the total bonus to 30% which means you’d only need to transfer 47,000 or 54,000 Chase points depending on the route.

United: Niche Use With Bilt points

If your total flight distance exceeds 6,000 flight miles, Aeroplan will require 90,000 points. United will require 88,000 miles regardless of the total distance, At that point, United has a slight advantage over Aeroplan. Plus, you can use United’s Excursionist Perk on a round-trip award.

Final Thoughts

Portugal continues to be one of the most requested destinations from STTP Premium members so it’s great to see plenty of non-stop space from the U,S.!

If you visit Lisbon, I would highly recommend scheduling a tour with my friend Antonio. I did two tours with him and he was excellent. Tell him I sent you!

Happy booking!
